Delaying completing your Self Assessment tax return?

HMRC is urging self-employed beauty and hair professionals to submit their Self Assessment tax returns for the 2022/23 tax year at the earliest opportunity.

Although the deadline is not until 31st January 2024, HMRC say that filing now could mean you benefit from an early refund if you’ve paid too much tax during 2022-2023. You’ll still have until 31st January to pay the tax due, but you’ll have time to look into payment options if you’re unable to pay in full by the deadline.

Newly self-employed professionals will need to register online for a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) if completing a Self Assessment tax return for the first time.

How ABT Accreditation is supporting industry learning

We all understand the importance of education within our industry; beauty and hair professionals never stop learning, and thankfully a theme within our sector is to continually improve skills, train in new treatments and pass knowledge between us.

The pathway from student to professional to teacher is one that is achievable for any hardworking and dedicated individual over time, and it’s heartening to see how many ABT members have joined as students, gained experience as ABT insured professionals, and gone on to train as Educators, opening their own ABT Accredited academies and schools. Some have even gone on to become members of advisory boards to help shape the future of the industry at the highest level.

This is why ABT place such high emphasis on education, and why ABT Accreditation of training providers has become a key part of its support of the industry. Since introducing ABT Accreditation 10 years ago, there are now more than 1,000 ABT Accredited companies spread across the UK and Ireland. To gain accreditation of a course, qualification or post graduate support training, providers must be able to prove that their course delivers education to high standards, that lecturers and trainers are qualified to deliver teaching, that

content is appropriate for the level of qualification, and that the course covers the requirements to gain professional insurance. Once a training provider submits their course for accreditation, it is scrutinised by ABT’s Accreditation Team before approval is gained.

Training providers can apply for ABT Accreditation for both face-to-face and online learning courses (ABT were amongst the first to offer this during lockdown). Once achieved, ABT Accreditation grants a college immediate credibility, giving students confidence to know the course is approved, validated and insurable by the UK’s leading membership and insurance provider.

ABT Accredited Training Providers are also eligible to offer ABT membership and insurance packages to students with a 10% discount and can take advantage of free online promotional support. They can also use the ABT logo for marketing purposes, on their website, and perhaps most importantly, on their students’ certificates.

ABT Accreditation ..........................................................................................................................................................

Reasons to get your courses

ABT Accredited

#1. ABT charge a one-off fee

ABT is the only membership provider to offer a one-off fee with no hidden charges, no annual renewal costs and no price per certificate issued to students. For example, an initial application for up to 10 courses costs just £250, and if you are insured with ABT there are no annual fees to pay.

#2. Join us at trade shows and events with VIP Entry

All ABT Accredited Training Providers are invited to join the ABT team at any of the key beauty trade exhibitions that we’re appearing at. Come to the stand for your free Goody Bag, join us at our Drinks Receptions, and put your feet up and escape a busy show in our ABT Lounge.

#3. Promote your business using the ABT Accredited Logo

Use the ABT Accredited logo to market yourself as an accredited trainer, and if you have your online courses accredited with ABT, you will also be able to use the ABT Online Accredited logo as well. Add our logo to your website, certificates, marketing materials and social media to highlight that your courses have been approved and endorsed.

#4. Free online promotion from ABT

SkinCeuticals’ new cream tackles skin ageing glycation

SkinCeuticals has launched a corrective cream to help reverse visible signs of ageing impacted by the natural ageing process of glycation.

SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Interrupter

Advanced is formulated with 18% Concentrated Proxylane™, 4.25% Wild Fruit Flavonoids and 0.1% Glycyrrhetinic Acid. The product addresses all phases of the glycation process, where excess sugars in the body bind to structural proteins such as collagen and form damaging advanced glycation end-products (A.G.E.s). These cause collagen to become weak and brittle, accelerating the formation of wrinkles, crepiness and dullness.

Clinical tests of use of this rich cream over 12 weeks revealed visibly smoother fine lines and 24-hour hydration.

How to Market Your Business on a Small Budget

Do you ever need to not market your business? Surely, when you are fully booked you don’t need to bother anymore. Why would you? If you are fully booked there is no room for anyone else.

Marketing your business is a never-ending task and there is never going to be a time when you won’t need to do it; I’m afraid if you think there will be you are very much mistaken. Even the likes of John Lewis, Coca-Cola and M&S market themselves and these are three exceptionally wellestablished businesses and brands, so if they still need to, so do you.

Your promotional calendar

A promotional calendar is the basis of what you are going to market. Your promotional calendar will tie in with special local/national events, new product or treatment launches or services that you want to highlight that are not as popular as others.

Promotions don’t have to be reductions and freebies, they can just be a focus, such as a product of the month. I am all for adding value so if you are going to offer something always upsell. For example, offer an upgraded version of a

What you spend, and where you spend it, are really important to the image, growth and success of your business, says Marie-Louise Coster.

Whilst the free marketing options don’t cost you money, they will cost your time.

For those of you who don’t sit on a Sunday night working on marketing, now is the |time to dust off your laptop!

gel manicure by including a massage and exfoliation, upgrade from one facial to the next etc. Show clients what else is available and let them see how beneficial these extras are to them. So how can you market your business effectively without spending a fortune?

The first thing you need to do is decide upon a marketing budget for the year or, if that is too far in advance, you at least need to have a monthly budget. Take a look at what marketing you did last year

and ask yourself these questions:

• What did you spend?

• How much extra revenue did that generate?

• Where did you advertise?

• What worked?

• What didn’t work?

Once you have this information you can make an informed decision about what you can/should spend and where.

Your marketing budget will need to increase year-on-year, but if you can’t really afford it to then you need to be savvier with how you spend your budget. Increase the marketing that costs your time rather than cold, hard cash.

The savvy thing to do is to absolutely exhaust all free options first before moving on to marketing options that involve an expense. Whilst the free marketing options don’t cost you money, they will cost your time. For those of you who don’t sit on a Sunday night working on marketing, now is the time to dust off your laptop or iPad. When you aren’t working to promote your business someone else is working to promote theirs and you are missing out.

Free marketing options

Build your website: Clients don’t look in the local directory or Yellow Pages anymore, they get their phone out and Google salons or services, and if you haven’t got a website they won’t find you.

35
....................................................................................................................................................... Marie-Louise Coster

Building a website yourself and utilising it is the first and cheapest marketing you can do. Don’t be afraid, it can be time consuming but even the least technologically-minded can do it. Google business listing: Once you have a website, set up a Google Business Profile. You can add all of your important information to it, add yourself to Google maps, have reviews and add pictures. You need at least 100 pictures on there for Google to recognise you. I know this is a lot, as I said earlier these options will be time consuming, but they are free and invaluable.

The important thing to remember with your Google listing, and your website, is that you need to add to them and update them regularly so as Google keeps remembering you are a real business and keeps you active.

Facebook: Every man and his dog are on Facebook; it’s your most instant access to your current clients and target audience. Run a range of competitions getting clients to share your posts with their friends, for example. Whilst this will cost you a prize, it is still a very cost-effective way of advertising and marketing.

No one has the time to post to Facebook daily but you need regular, daily activity to keep people’s interest. Set your posts up a week, or a few days, in advance so the page runs itself. Make the posts interesting and interactive. Social media is a great shop window, find out the social media outlets your clients are using and focus on those.

Instagram: Instagram is far more visual so is really interesting to clients and great for before and after pictures, showing clients inside the salon, introducing the team etc.

36 Marie-Louise Coster .....................................................................................................................................................
Once you have a website, set up a Google Business Profile. You can add yourself to Google maps, encourage reviews and add pictures of your business.

The majority of my clients are Facebook users, so I am less active on Instagram for the salon, however where Instagram does work well for me is as a portfolio for my fashion and celebrity work. Think about your audience, and potential audience, and focus on the source they are likely to use.

Twitter: You can set your Facebook to automatically update your Twitter (and your Instagram and vice versa). Be mindful that they are quite different with very different audiences.

Free online business listings: Search the internet to find directories where you can have a business listing for free. These activities increase your SEO (search engine optimisation) without having to pay for Google Ads etc.

Altering your website regularly, irrelevant of how the small change is, i.e., updating a monthly page of news or promotions, will also increase your SEO.

These are just some ideas to get you started. Ask your current clients how they found you and where they look when searching for services, utilise free options first and build upon it.

A potential client needs to see you advertised seven times before they are likely to book, so make sure you use a variety of outlets to market yourself. Whatever you do, keep doing it and never stop!

How to write better social media captions

Social media expert that makes your salon stand out and get the results you want.

Social media, love it or hate it, it’s pretty much a must these days if you want to grow your business and reach new clients.

According to Facebook, three million businesses actively advertise on Facebook. That’s three million companies from all over the world!

That’s a lot of other businesses in your area, expertise and social platforms that you’re competing with, so it’s important that your page, and more importantly your content stands out!

If you find writing captions for your social media posts tricky or get in a muddle when you start to write, this article is for you!

Firstly, lets break down the components that every social media post needs:

• The Hook – this is the bit that captures your audience’s attention

• The Body – this is where you write all about your offer or service

• The CTA or Call to Action –this is where you tell your reader what to do next.

38 Alicia Humphreys ...........................................................................................................................................................

The Hook

Hooks are one of the most important elements of copywriting. They are the first thing that readers see and can make or break a reader’s decision to stop on your post. The best headlines create curiosity or provoke an emotional reaction. Here’s some example hooks you could use in your next social media post:

• 3 ways to improve the quality of your hair

• Listen up, if your nails just won’t grow, this could be why

• Why you should be using hair masks on your hair

• Here are 5 ways to improve the quality of your skin

• Here’s the easiest way to book with (salon name)

Any one of those hooks would stop you in your tracks and can be used both as an image or in your caption.

39
............................................................................................................................................................ Alicia Humphreys
“Including a Call to Action in your social media posts will help you get more engagement”

The Body

This is the main part of your text; the length of your caption doesn’t matter too much as long as you’re getting all the information into it. Try to keep your captions as jargon free as possible and try to write with your reader in mind. A well written caption can mean the difference between getting your message across or having it lost in the noise.

Remember to use line breaks, bullet points and emojis to make the caption easier and more exciting to read.

40 Alicia Humphreys ...........................................................................................................................................................
“There’s a lot of other businesses that you’re competing with, so it’s important that your content stands out!”

The Call to Action

Every good social media caption should have a CTA (Call to Action), otherwise it’s like you’re telling a story! The call to action gives your reader an instruction, it tells them what to do after they have read your caption.

It can be as simple as asking readers to like or share your post, or it can be more specific such as asking them to visit your website or sign up for a newsletter.

Including a Call to Action in your social media posts will help you get more engagement and ensure that you are getting the most out of each post

Here are five Call to Action ideas for your next post:

• Head to my booking link to book your next appointment.

• Want to find out more? Slide into my DMs! I’d love to chat to you about how I can help!

• Let me know your opinion with your favourite emoji below!

• If you found this useful, remember to tap save!

• Share this with someone else who might find this useful!

Don’t forget to be natural and always keep your end reader in mind. If you’re unsure if your post actually sounds like you, read it out loud or to someone else. You’ll soon pick up on any bits that don’t sound quite right or like your usual tone of voice.

And finally, don’t over think it! Some of my best captions are ones that I’ve just jotted down and hit publish on. You’ve got this!

BeautifulBlooming

Nothing says British summer more than a garden of pretty blooms, so nail expert Caroline Robert has created this floral themed nail art design that’s easy to recreate whilst giving maximum impact. Here Caroline used Gellux Builder Gel and Gellux gel polish from the brand’s Seas the Day Summer ’23 collection.

Step #1

Prep the nails and push back the cuticles. Shape and buff the natural nail bed with a grey and yellow buffer. Dust and wipe the nails with Gellux Prep and Wipe and followed by two thin layers of Gellux Builder Gel Rose Pink, curing each layer for 60 seconds.

Lightly buff the nails for a matt look and remove any dust using a nail brush

Step #2

On the index finger, apply two coats of Gellux Cray-Sea across the whole nail.

On the middle finger, create a French tip using a thin liner art brush and Gellux Shellarious. Cure for 60 seconds.

Step #3

Using a nail art brush and Gellux Shellarious, create brush strokes in a circle to give a petal effect on the thumb and ring.

Repeat this on the little finger using Gellux Cray-Sea. Cure for 60 seconds.

44
1 2 3

Step #4

Using a dotting tool, place a dot of Gellux Rosie Anna in the centre of the petals on the thumb and ring finger, and on the little finger, apply a dot of Gellux Jades A Gem to the centre of the flowers.

Step #5

Add dots of colour to the nails, again using a dotting tool. Here we’ve used Gellux Jades A Gem to contrast on the thumb and ring finger, and Gellux Shellarious around the flowers on the little finger. Cure for 60 seconds.

Step #6

Finally for a glossy finish, apply Gellux Shiny Top Coat and cure for 60 seconds.

Wipe away the sticky residue with Gellux Prep + Wipe before applying cuticle oil to finish.

How to handle complaints & poor reviews

Complaints are never nice to receive. It can really knock your confidence and get your back up. But you also need to look at it in a positive way. If you didn’t receive these complaints, then you would never know what to improve on. We all get a handful of clients that love a good moan, but behind every complaint there will be something you can improve on to make your work better, even if its tiny. So how is best to handle your complaints?

#1. Always respond as soon as possible

When we are busy doing clients all day, it is very easy to think “I will reply to that later” or let it get your back up and think they can wait for a reply. Then, later never comes as life just gets busy. You want to make sure you reply as soon as possible. Always thank your client for their review/feedback, apologise and respond by how you are going to fix the issue. Make sure your response is very friendly and coming

from a place of care. Don’t get defensive, it won’t do you any favours.

#2. The client is always right

This isn’t always correct at all, but we need to make them feel like they are right whilst also educating them. The client is right in how they felt their experience or treatment was carried out. Use this an opportunity to turn the complaint around. For example, a client emails to say they had lashes done two weeks ago. They have hardly any lashes left, and their natural lashes are falling out. They aren’t happy that they paid £80 for this to happen. That is a complaint but also lack of education. The aftercare needed to be explained in more depth including the process of the lash cycle. Your client would then understand that this is normal. I would advise you to respond to this, apologising that they aren’t happy, educate them on the process and offer to pop back for an infill. It’s totally up to you as the business owner if you want to do this for free, at a discount or full price.

Katie Godfrey .................................................................................................................................................................
52

If you receive a poor review through sources like Facebook or Google, I would first call or email the client to try and resolve it.

................................................................................................................................................................. Katie Godfrey
53

#3. Make sure you share with the

If you have a team, it’s always important to share back to them the reviews and feedback.

Some business owners avoid this as they don’t want to hurt the team members’ feelings or knock their confidence. I completely understand this, and you should always have your team’s back in a complaint, but you should always share with them what is happening and ways they can improve. We can only excel in our careers by learning and that’s through feedback.

#4. Responding to a bad online review

Nowadays there are so many more ways for clients to leave a review through sources like Facebook and Google. We all have those heart dropping moments when a 1-star review pings up.

Again, I would always reply to these so other potential clients can see your customer service shining through and see that whatever experience the other client had, it is now sorted satisfactorily.

If a review like this pings up, I would first call or email the client to try and resolve it. Then you can write back on the open review: “Thank you so much for your review, I am glad we have now sorted this out.”

If you can’t get hold of them, you can reply to the open review by saying: “I am so sorry to hear this, we want to sort this asap but can’t get through to you. Please could you give me a call.”

Anyone looking at the reviews can see how professional you are. Often, in my experience, if you do resolve a complaint with a client, they will take the review down which is a bonus!

Good customer service is key when handling complaints. You can easily turn that bad review into a loyal happy customer if it is dealt with correctly. Someone who’s not happy is likely to tell five other people about their experience. A client that is happy is likely not to tell many people at all. We need to make sure we capture and support the unhappy clients.

Full head

with root smudge highlights

Step #1: Starting with highlights around the nape hairline, section hair horizontally around the hairline. I do this so the client gets the effect when they style their hair up too. Apply White Osmo Ikon Power Lift Dust

Free Bleach White with 20vol/6%

OSMO IKON Cream Developer.

Step #2: Follow this highlighting technique upwards in straight sections until the crown area.

Step #3: Continue with fine slices weaved to get maximum blonde result.

Step #4: This is now hitting what I call the “Money Piece”area. Apply fine weaves again and continue with the same 20%vol/6% here too.

Step #5: For the money piece section, I apply thesandwich technique. I start with a weave and end on a weave, but with fine slices in between.

Step #6: Round the top section, I mix the bleach with 30vol/9% developer. This is because the top will take quicker than the back area, so the vol change gives it more of a boost.

Step #7: After I’ve rinsed the treatment off and towel dried the hair, I smudge the roots with Osmo Ikon Natural Base 6.00 to remove the foil line (but keep it away from the face area blonde) for a cooler base.Ensure you’re leaving the money piece out though whilst smudging.

I then mix Osmo Ikon 10.1 and 9.1 together (both ash blondes to help neutralise any yellow) with Osmo

Ikon Pastel Ice Metallic with 5 vol (for brightness) and apply all over the hair, including the money piece last. Leave on 10 minutes, rinse and then apply the Osmo Super Silver No Yellow Mask for final conditioning and to knock out any remaining brassiness.

Step #8: To style the hair, I spritz with Osmo X.Posed Leavein Treatment that helps to repair and replenish dry and damaged hair without weighing it down. Comb through then apply Osmo X.Posed Blow Dry Balm for a perfectly smooth blow dry.
